Storing maggots at home requires strict adherence to the temperature regime, otherwise the larvae will turn into pupa or die. The refrigerator is an ideal place for creating an artificial winter hut, allowing the vital activity of insects to be preserved.

Unlike worms, fly larvae have a high metabolic rate at room temperature. If you simply leave the jar on the table, after a few days active pupation will begin and the bait will become unsuitable for fishing. Proper organization of the process will allow you to maintain the mobility and attractiveness of the bait for up to several months.

There are several proven methods, depending on the desired shelf life and available equipment. Whether it's a standard freezer or a vegetable compartment, each method has its own nuances. Understanding the biology of the larvae will help you always have fresh and high-quality bait on hand for any fishing.

Biological characteristics and preparation for storage

Before placing the larvae in the cold, you need to understand what is happening to their body. When the temperature drops to +4...+6°C, metabolic processes slow down, but do not stop completely. The larva falls into a state close to suspended animation and stops feeding and moving. However, if the temperature drops below a critical level, the intracellular fluid will freeze, which will lead to death.

Pre-cleaning is a critically important step. Maggot, purchased in a store or obtained independently, is often mixed with sawdust and waste products. Leaving the larvae in a dirty environment will lead to rapid heating of the mass due to the activity of bacteria and the subsequent death of the entire batch.

To do this, it is better to use the lower shelves of the refrigerator or a special compartment for vegetables and fruits, where the cold is distributed more evenly and there is no risk of accidental freezing at the back wall.

It is important to consider the operation of the thermostat of your refrigerator. When the compressor is turned on, the temperature at the rear wall may briefly drop below zero. Therefore, the container with larvae cannot be pressed close to the back wall or ceiling of the refrigerator compartment.
