We build a regular refrigerator into a kitchen set: 7 steps with photos and schemes

Built-in refrigerators cost 30–70% more than free-standing models, but their main advantage is perfect integration into the kitchen interior. What to do if you already have a regular refrigerator, but you order furniture for built-in appliances? Or vice versa: a kitchen with a niche is ready, but the budget does not allow you to buy a specialized model?

9 out of 10 free-standing refrigerators can be adapted to a built-in format if three conditions are met: the correct dimensions of the niche, the organization of ventilation and reliable fastening of the facade. This article contains step-by-step instructions with photos of real projects, a comparison of the costs of remodeling vs buying a new unit, as well as an analysis of typical mistakes that cause the refrigerator to overheat or does not close well.

We will not convince you of the need for such an upgrade - the decision depends on your priorities. But if your goal is to save 20–50 thousand rubles and get visually “native” built-in equipment, read on. All steps are illustrated with photographs from custom furniture workshops and repair services.

⚠️ Attention: Converting a refrigerator to a built-in format will void the manufacturer's warranty. If the unit is under warranty, first assess the risks - repairing the compressor or electronics may cost more than saving on purchasing a built-in model.

1. Compatibility check: which refrigerators can be built in

Not every free-standing refrigerator is suitable for conversion. Main selection criteria:

  • 📏 Case depth - no more 55–60 cm (standard for built-in models). Refrigerators with a depth of 65+ cm will require a non-standard niche or recessed into the wall.
  • 🔄 Cooling type: No Frost or Low Frost preferable to a drip system - they heat up less and less often require defrosting in a closed space.
  • 🔌 Compressor location: if it is located on the back wall (and not at the bottom), an additional ventilation grill will be required.
  • 🚪 Door hinges: canopies should allow opening to 90°+ without resting on furniture. In 80% of cases, the hinges will have to be moved or replaced.

2. Niche preparation: dimensions and ventilation

Standard niche dimensions for a built-in refrigerator:

Critical errors when preparing a niche:

  1. Lack of ventilation holes in the lower and upper parts of the cabinet. Consequence: the compressor overheats, the refrigerator turns off due to protection.
  2. Use of chipboard without a moisture-resistant coating. Consequence: the material swells from condensation, the facade is deformed.
  3. Attaching the refrigerator directly to the wall without shock-absorbing pads. Consequence: the vibration of the compressor is transmitted to the furniture, a hum appears.

Optimal ventilation scheme:

For air circulation, holes with a diameter of 3-5 cm are drilled in the lower part of the niche (or a decorative grille is installed), in the upper part there is a slot high 2–3 cm across the entire width. If the refrigerator is in a column, the side walls of the cabinet should be 1-2 cm away from the body.

3. Dismantling the original doors and preparing to attach the facade

To make the refrigerator look like a built-in one, the original doors are removed and replaced with a facade made of the same material as the kitchen furniture. Process:

  1. Removing doors:
    • 🔧 Unscrew the top hinge (usually it is hidden under a decorative plug).
    • 🔧 Holding the door, unscrew the bottom hinge.
    • 🔧 Remove door from the guides (in some models you will need to disconnect the opening sensor wiring).
  2. Removing handles and magnetic seals:
    • 🔨 Carefully cut off the seal with a stationery knife if it interferes with fastening the facade.
    • 🔨 Seal the holes from handles with masking tape to avoid dust.
  • Case preparation:
    • 🧴 Clean the front panel of the refrigerator from glue and grease (use white spirit or isopropyl alcohol).
    • 📐 Apply markings for the façade fastenings (step back 2-3 cm from the edges).

    ⚠️ Attention: In refrigerators with electronic control on the door (for example, Samsung Family Hub) you cannot completely remove the facade - this will disrupt the operation touch buttons. In such cases, use overlay facades with cutouts for the display.

    4. Manufacturing and fastening of the facade

    The facade can be ordered from a furniture workshop or made independently from LDSP, MDF or acrylic. Material requirements:

    • 📏 Thickness — 16–18 mm (thinner it will sag, thicker it will make the door heavier).

    What to do if the facade does not close tightly?

    If after installing the facade The refrigerator door does not fit tightly, check:

    1. Refrigerator level —it should be level (use a laser level).

    2. Hinges —they may need to be adjusted (loosen the screws and tighten them in the right direction).

    3. Magnetic seal - if it remains on the original door, glue a new one to the facade (for example, 3M VHB tape).

    4. Weight of the facade - if the material is too heavy, install gas shock absorbers (as in kitchen cabinets).

    5. Moving hinges and adjusting the opening

    Native refrigerator hinges are rarely suitable for a built-in facade - they either rest against the furniture or do not provide the desired opening angle Solutions:

      • Remove the original hinges from the refrigerator body.
      • Attach them to the inside of the facade, moving 2-3 cm from the edge.
      • Adjust the position so that the door opens to 110°.

    6. Connection and testing

    After installing the facade and hinges:

    1. Connect the refrigerator to the network and let it work 2–3 hours with the door open (to check ventilation).
    2. Check the temperature in the main chamber and freezer - it should correspond to the factory settings (±2°C).
    3. Close the front and leave the refrigerator for 12 hours. Then. check:
      • 🌡️ Temperature inside (should not rise above +5°C in the refrigerator compartment).
      • 🔊 Noise level (norm - up to 40 dB).
      • 💧 Presence of condensation on the facade (if any, improve ventilation).
