Owners of small-sized housing often face the problem of a lack of usable space when trying to place household appliances in the kitchen. In old panel houses, popularly called “Khrushchev” buildings, architects often provided special niches under the windows, which were originally intended as winter refrigerators. Many residents, wanting to free up space in the kitchen, try to install a modern electric refrigerator there, forgetting about the physical laws of heat transfer. A refrigerator operating in cooling mode generates heat, which must go into the environment.
An attempt to “insulate” a refrigerator in a niche often leads to the opposite effect: the unit overheats, the compressor wears out, and the food spoils. However, if by insulation we mean high-quality thermal insulation of the niche itself from freezing of walls and drafts, then such a task has a right to exist. It is important to clearly separate the concepts: we are not heating the refrigerator, we are protecting it from the extreme cold of the wall and creating the right conditions for heat removal. Why a refrigerator in a Khrushchev-era niche requires a special approach
The niche under the window in a Khrushchev-era building is a structural element that was originally created as “refrigerator” without electricity. The thickness of the back wall of such a niche is often only half a brick, and sometimes even less. In winter, the temperature in this recess can drop to values at which compressor a conventional refrigerator simply will not start or will work with critical overloads. Choosing the right materials for thermal insulation of a niche
The building materials market offers many solutions, but not all They are suitable for the conditions of a kitchen niche with a working electrical appliance. The main requirement for insulation in this case is low thermal conductivity and resistance to moisture. The use of hygroscopic materials such as mineral wool without quality protection can lead to wetting and loss of properties. Water that gets into the structure of the cotton wool will become an excellent conductor of cold, nullifying all efforts.
The most optimal option is considered extruded polystyrene foam (XPS). This material has a closed cellular structure, due to which it practically does not absorb water. It is durable, lightweight and has one of the lowest thermal conductivities among available insulation materials. XPS boards do not require additional vapor barrier, which simplifies installation in cramped niche conditions. An alternative can be polyurethane foamapplied by spraying, which creates a monolithic layer without seams.

When choosing the thickness of the material you should be guided by calculations, but in the conditions of Khrushchev, every centimeter counts. Usually a layer of 30-50 mm is sufficient if the main task is to cut off the cold front from the wall. If you stick penofol with foil directly to the wall or to the refrigerator, it will turn into a regular heat conductor. The foil should “look” towards the source of heat or cold, but not touch it.
Surface preparation and waterproofing the base
Before Before installing the insulation, you must carefully prepare the surface of the niche. The walls of old houses often have cracks, chips and traces of old plaster, which can crumble. Any defects must be eliminated, since under a layer of insulation they can become hotbeds for the spread of mold. The layer is applied with a brush or roller to the entire area of the niche, including the floor and side walls. Waterproofing layer must be continuous, without breaks. If the niche has a back wall facing the street or into a ventilation duct, maximum attention should be paid to its condition. In some cases, it is advisable to make an additional floor screed with the addition of water repellents.

Insulation installation technology in cramped conditions
Installation of insulation boards in a refrigerator niche requires care and precision cutting. The slabs extruded polystyrene foam can be easily cut with a knife, but the edges must be smooth to ensure a tight fit. The material can be secured with special glue or mushroom dowels with a wide head. In a niche, the adhesive method is preferable, as it saves space and avoids through holes in the wall through which cold can penetrate.
The adhesive is applied to the slab along the perimeter and in the center, after which the insulation is pressed tightly against the wall. It is important to avoid the formation of voids between the wall and the slab. If the geometry of the niche is complex, the slabs are cut to the nearest millimeter. All joints between sheets of insulation must be sealed with foil tape or filled with foam glue. This will create a continuous thermal insulation contour.
