Loss of cooling capacity is one of the most common causes of failure of household appliances. If you notice that the compressor is running without interruption, and the shelves are warm, most likely there is a leak refrigerant. In such a situation, many owners consider the possibility of doing their own repairs in order to save on calling a specialist. However, the process of restoring the circuit requires not only theoretical knowledge, but also specific equipment.

Before taking active steps, you need to understand the physics of the process. Freon circulates in a closed system under pressure, and simply “topping up” gas, as in a car air conditioner, will not work here. The system must be completely sealed and dry. Any mistake at the preparation stage can lead to the final failure of an expensive compressor or the formation of an explosive mixture.

This manual describes the technical side of the process for those who have the skills to work with the tool. We will go through the stages of finding leaks, evacuation and charging the system. Remember that working with gas equipment requires increased caution and compliance with safety precautions.

Diagnostics and search for refrigerant leaks

The first and most important step is to localize the place through which the gas has escaped. Without eliminating the hole in the circuit, any refill will only be a temporary measure, which will lead to a breakdown again in a couple of days. Most often, leaks occur in places where tubes are soldered, on the evaporator (“crying” or in the freezer) or in the foamed part of the housing.

To search for microcracks invisible to the eye, professionals use leak detector or a soap solution. At home, you can use the overpressure method by pumping nitrogen into the system. If the pressure drops, it means the seal is broken. Visually look for oily spots - freon carries compressor oil with it, and such marks are a sure sign of depressurization.

⚠️ Attention: Never try to find a leak using an open flame. Many modern refrigerants are flammable or release toxic substances when heated.

If the leak is found in an accessible place, for example, on a visible part of the pipeline, it can be soldered. A torch and solder are used for this. However, if damage is found in the foamed part (inside the walls of the refrigerator), independent repair becomes extremely difficult and often impractical, since it requires opening the thermal insulation.

Necessary tools and equipment

High-quality refilling is impossible without a specialized set of tools. A regular set of keys will not be enough here. You will need to assemble a whole arsenal that will allow you to control the pressure, clean the system and dose the gas with gram precision.

The main tool is vacuum pump, which creates a deep vacuum to remove moisture and air. Also a pressure gauge station (manifold) with two hoses (blue and red) and pressure gauges. To refill, you need scales with high accuracy (up to 5-10 grams) and a cylinder with the appropriate type of freon.

Preparing the system: purging and soldering

After eliminating the physical leak, it is necessary to prepare the system for refueling. Air and moisture could remain in the circuit, which, when mixed with oil and freon, form acid that destroys the motor windings. Therefore, the cleaning step is critical.

First, you need to flush the system with nitrogen. To do this, connect a nitrogen cylinder through a reducer to a filter drier or a cut capillary tube. Short bursts of pressure will help flush out old oil and debris from the lines. Do this in a well-ventilated area.

Then the filling fitting is inserted. Usually it is cut into the process pipe of the compressor. The soldering area must be cleaned to a shine, heated with a torch and carefully soldered the brass nipple. It is important not to overheat the tube, so as not to burn it or deform the plastic nearby.

⚠️ Attention: Before soldering, be sure to relieve pressure in the system, if there is any pressure left there. Sudden heating of a closed volume with gas can lead to an explosion.

After installing the fitting, the system is considered ready to connect a vacuum pump. Make sure all connections are tight. To check the tightness of the soldering, you can apply a slight nitrogen pressure and cover the seams with soap foam - the absence of bubbles confirms the quality of the work.

The process of vacuuming a refrigerator

Vacuuming is the process of removing air and, most importantly, moisture from the circuit. Water that enters the system freezes in the capillary tube, forming an ice plug that blocks the circulation of freon. The pump must run long enough to evaporate all the moisture at low pressure.

Connect the blue hose of the pressure gauge station to the process connection of the refrigerator, and the yellow hose to the vacuum pump. Open the valve on the manifold (blue) and turn on the pump. The pressure gauge needle should go into the negative zone (up to -1 bar or 30 inHg).

The operating time of the pump depends on the degree of contamination of the system with moisture. The minimum time is 30 minutes, but ideally the process should last 1 to 2 hours. If the pressure gauge needle begins to creep up after turning off the pump and closing the valve, it means that there is moisture left in the system or there is a leak.

Why can’t you just bleed the air with freon?

The method of “blowing with freon” is considered handicraft. Freon is heavier than air, but it does not guarantee the removal of moisture dissolved in the oil. The vacuum pump physically draws out water vapor, lowering the boiling point of the liquid, which allows it to be removed from the system.

To speed up the process, experienced technicians can lightly heat the compressor with a hairdryer (not an open flame!) to help the moisture evaporate. After completing the evacuation, close the valve on the manifold and only then turn off the pump so that the oil from the pump is not sucked back into the circuit.

Freon filling technology

This is the final and most critical stage. Refueling is carried out strictly according to the weight indicated on the manufacturer's technical label. It is impossible to fill modern refrigerators with a capillary tube “by eye” or by pressure, since the pressure depends on the ambient temperature and can be misleading.

Place the freon cylinder on an electronic scale. Turn it over if charging is in the liquid phase (for R134a this is permissible, for R600a - only in the vapor phase, read the instructions for the refrigerant!). Open the valve on the cylinder and carefully open the blue valve on the manifold.

Watch the scale readings. As soon as the weight of the cylinder decreases by the required number of grams (for example, 60g), quickly close the valve on the manifold, and then on the cylinder. Turn on the refrigerator and watch the pressure gauge. The pressure should stabilize.

After refueling, it is necessary to crimp (solder) the filling fitting. This must be done quickly, before the freon has time to escape. First, clamp the tube with a clamp, then quickly unsolder the fitting and solder the end of the tube. Check the seam with a soap solution.

Control launch and operation check

After the system is sealed, turn on the refrigerator. Initial entry into the mode can take from 2 to 6 hours. At this time, do not open the doors frequently so as not to disturb the temperature balance. Listen to the operation of the compressor - it should work cyclically, intermittently.

Check the evaporator temperature. In the freezer, the entire evaporator should freeze evenly (“crying” effect or uniform frost). If only a part is frozen or a “bald spot” is visible at the entrance of the capillary tube, there may be moisture or blockage in the system.

⚠️ Attention: If the compressor has been running without turning off for more than 12 hours, and there is no cold, turn off the device immediately. This is a sign of insufficient charging, a leak, or a malfunction of the compressor itself.

Use a thermometer to check the temperature in the chambers. In the main chamber it should drop to +4...+5°C, in the freezer - to -18°C and below. If the indicators are normal and the compressor is turned off by the thermostat, the repair can be considered successful.

Frequent errors when refueling yourself

Independent repairs often end in calling the technician again, but with more serious damage. One of the main mistakes is neglecting to replace the filter drier. This element is disposable, and when the circuit is opened, it required needs to be replaced with a new one, otherwise moisture will quickly disable the equipment.

Another mistake is an overdose of freon. “Extra” gas increases the pressure in the system, the compressor works with overload, and the cooling capacity drops. Under-fuelling leads to engine overheating. The accuracy of the scales plays a decisive role here.

Also, beginners often forget about the tightness of their connections. The use of low-quality solder or poor cleaning of pipes leads to microcracks, which expand over time under the influence of vibration of the compressor.

Is it possible to fill with automobile freon?

Theoretically, R134a is similar, but automobile cylinders often contain additives (oils, dyes, fragrances) that can be incompatible with refrigeration compressor oil. This can lead to the formation of sediment and blockage of the capillary tube.

And remember about safety precautions. Working with gas under pressure and open fire requires a sober mind and the absence of drafts. If you doubt your abilities at any stage, it is better to stop and turn to professionals.

How much freon is needed to refill a regular refrigerator?

The amount of freon depends on the model and volume of the chambers. Typically, household refrigerators are filled with 30 to 150 grams of refrigerant. The exact number is always indicated on the nameplate located inside the chamber or on the back of the case.

Is it possible to fill a refrigerator without a vacuum pump?
