The classic and most reliable option is the old one propane cylinder with a volume of 50 liters. It has sufficient strength and volume for comfortable work.

In addition to the container, you will need a whole set of fittings and shut-off valves. Be sure to prepare a check valve that will prevent air from escaping back into the motor when stopping, and a pressure switch (pressostat) to automatically control the on and off cycles. Without these elements, the system will not function autonomously.

To connect all nodes into a single circuit, copper tubes, high-pressure hoses and clamps will be required. Don't forget about the oil trap and water separator if you plan to use the compressor for painting. Contact of oil or condensate on the surface to be painted is unacceptable and will lead to defects.

Dismantling and initial check of the compressor

The first stage of work is carefully removing the motor from the refrigerator body. When dismantling, it is important not to damage the copper tubes coming out of the housing, since air will subsequently be taken and pumped through them. Usually there are three of them: two thin and one thick. The thick tube is the output to the condenser, and the thin ones are the inlet and outlet of the refrigerant.

To check the operation, connect the engine to the network through a temporary starting capacitor or a native starting relay. A short run will allow you to determine the direction of the flows. Place your finger on the thin tubes: where the air is blown in (sucked in), there will be an inlet, and where it is blown out, there will be an outlet. In the receiver body it is necessary to cut several holes for threaded fittings. The minimum set includes: an inlet (bottom or side), an outlet (usually at the top or in the upper third of the side wall), a hole for a pressure gauge, a hole for a safety valve, and a condensate drain hole at the lowest point.

If you are using a fire extinguisher or other container, make sure that the body material is suitable for welding and can withstand high pressure. Aluminum cylinders are more difficult to weld than steel cylinders and require special skills. For a beginner, it is better to choose a steel container with known strength characteristics.

How to safely cut a cylinder?

Before cutting a cylinder with a grinder, make sure it is completely empty. Unscrew the valve, turn the cylinder over and let the remaining gas escape. Ideally, fill the cylinder with water to the brim, this will completely eliminate the risk of ignition of gas residues when heating the metal.

Assembly of the pneumatic circuit and installation

Assembling the system begins with installing the compressor on the frame. The engine is mounted through rubber dampers (you can use old bushings or pieces of rubber) to dampen vibration. The receiver is installed vertically or horizontally, depending on the design of the frame, but it must be securely fixed with clamps.

The connection between the compressor and the receiver is made through a check valve. Air is supplied from the motor discharge tube to the valve and then to the receiver. The check valve is critically important: it prevents air from blowing back into the engine at the moment when the pressure switch opens the contacts and the motor stops.

Next, the air preparation group is installed. After the receiver, a tee is installed to which the following are connected: a pressure switch (for controlling the motor), a pressure gauge (for visual control) and an outlet valve with a reducer. The reducer allows you to reduce the pressure to the operating value for a specific tool, for example, 2-4 atmospheres for a spray gun.

Don't forget about the capacitor. The starting capacitor is necessary to start the engine, especially under load. Some circuits use a two-capacitor system: one for starting (turned off by a centrifugal switch or time relay), the other for working. The connection diagram depends on the type of engine (RSIR, CSIR, RSCR).

Oil change and system maintenance

One ​​of the most controversial issues is whether the oil needs to be changed? The factory version is filled with refrigeration oil, which is not afraid of contact with freon. When working with air it can oxidize. If the compressor operates rarely and for a short time, you can leave the original oil, simply monitoring its level.

For intensive use, it is recommended to flush the system and fill in with synthetic compressor oil. The replacement procedure is complicated: you need to open the case, pour out the old fluid, rinse the insides with solvent and fill in the new one. However, there is a risk of unbalancing the rotor or damaging the windings during disassembly.

Regular maintenance also includes draining condensate from the receiver. Moisture in the air settles at the bottom of the cylinder and causes corrosion. If water is not drained regularly, rust can eat away at the metal, resulting in reduced strength and potential rupture of the pressure container.

⚠️ Caution: Never exceed the maximum operating pressure specified in the specifications of your receiver and fittings. Installing a too powerful motor on a weak cylinder turns the device into a time bomb.

First start-up and pressure adjustment

Before the first full start, check all connections for leaks. Inflate the system with air (you can temporarily use a hand pump or other compressor) and generously lubricate all joints with soapy water. The appearance of bubbles will indicate leaks that need to be repaired.

Adjust the pressure switch. Usually there are two adjustment springs inside the relay housing: the large one is responsible for the on/off pressure (differential), the small one is responsible for the pressure difference. Start with the factory settings, but if necessary, adjust them to suit your needs.

Start the compressor and time the time it takes for it to pump the receiver from minimum to maximum. This will help you understand the system performance. If the engine heats up faster than the pressure builds up, the load may be too high or there are problems with the piston group.

Is it possible to use a compressor from a refrigerator for sandblasting?

No, the performance (liters per minute) of one refrigeration compressor is absolutely not enough for sandblasting. Sandblasting requires a huge air flow (from 500-800 l/min), and a household motor produces about 50-80 l/min. The pressure will drop instantly, and the process will become impossible.

What is the maximum size of the spray gun that can be used?

For one compressor from the refrigerator, spray guns with a nozzle of 0.8–1.0 mm (mini-jets) or airbrushes are optimal.
