The appearance of a puddle under the lower shelves of the refrigerator is an alarming signal that cannot be ignored. Water can not only spoil the food lying at the bottom, but also lead to corrosion of metal parts of the body or swelling of the laminated floor in the kitchen. Most often, equipment owners notice a problem when they try to get apples or greens from the lower container.
The situation when condensation does not have time to evaporate and accumulates in the form of a visible liquid indicates a violation of the moisture removal cycle. The system designed to remove water from the working chamber has ceased to cope with its task. This can be caused either by simple inattention when loading products, or by a technical malfunction.
Self-diagnosis will help you understand whether an urgent call for a technician is needed or the problem can be solved in 15 minutes. In this article, we will analyze the main mechanical and technical causes of leaks, and also provide an algorithm of actions to eliminate them.
Clogged drainage hole: the most common cause
In the vast majority of modern refrigerator models, be it LG, Samsung or Bosch, an automatic moisture removal system is used. The condensate formed on the back wall flows into the groove and through a special hole goes into the evaporator, where it evaporates. If there is water under the boxes, in 80% of cases the clogged drainage hole is to blame.
During operation, crumbs, pieces of packaging film, green leaves or even seeds can get into the groove. Over time, this waste mixes with mucus and forms a dense plug. The water stops leaving and begins to overflow over the edge of the gutter, flowing onto the shelf and then to the bottom of the refrigerator compartment.
To clean the channel, it is not necessary to disassemble the unit. Usually it is enough to take a cotton swab or thin flexible wire (you can use a pipe cleaner) and carefully clean the inlet. After mechanical cleaning, it is recommended to pour some warm water from a syringe into it to flush the system.
⚠️ Attention: Never use sharp metal objects, such as knives or knitting needles, to clean the drainage. You may accidentally puncture the thin tube or damage the insulation, causing freon to escape and costly repairs.
If water continues to accumulate after cleaning, the clog may be deeper, in the bends of the tube inside the housing. In this case, you may need to partially disassemble the rear panel of the refrigerator to access the drain pump or tube.
Evaporator freezing and defrosting failure
System No Frost or drip defrosting system operates cyclically. Periodically, the compressor turns off, and the ice on the evaporator melts, turning into water. If this process is disrupted, the ice does not have time to melt completely or the melt water freezes in the drainage tube, turning into an ice plug.
When an ice plug forms, new condensate has no outlet. It accumulates until the volume of melted ice exceeds the capacity of the gutter. As a result, the water overflows and ends up at the bottom of the refrigerator, often under vegetable boxes.
The reasons may lie in the malfunction of one of the key elements of the defrosting system:
- ⚙️ Faulty Defrosting heating element —the heating element has burned out and does not heat the evaporator.
- 🕰️ The defrosting timer is out of order - it does not give the command to turn on the defrosting at the right time.
- 🌡️ The defrosting sensor is not working - it incorrectly reads the temperature and blocks the defrosting process.
You can diagnose the problem visually by removing the back plastic panel in the freezer or refrigerator compartment (depending on the model). If you see a massive layer of ice or a “coat” that does not melt when the power is turned on, the problem is in the defrosting system.
How to check the defrost heating element with a multimeter?
To check, you need to “ring” the heating element. First unplug the refrigerator. Remove the back panel, find the heating element (usually this is a curved tube under the evaporator). Disconnect the wires going to the heating element. Switch the multimeter to resistance (ohms) measurement mode. Touch the probes to the contacts of the heating element. If the device shows infinity (break), the heating element has burned out and requires replacement. If the resistance is within 200-500 Ohms, the element is working properly.
Improper operation and user errors
Often, technical specialists come to a call about a “breakdown”, which turns out to be a consequence of improper use of equipment. Water may appear under the drawers if you violated the food storage rules or temperature conditions.
One of the common mistakes is loading hot or too warm foods into the chamber. When you put a pot of soup in the refrigerator, it begins to actively evaporate moisture. The ventilation system cannot cope with such a volume of steam; it condenses on the walls and products, flowing down in huge quantities.

If the trough is skewed, water flows not into the drainage hole, but past it, immediately onto the inner wall and further down. It is also worth checking the integrity of the door seals. If the rubber is torn or does not fit tightly, warm, moist air from the room enters the chamber.
Moisture from the air actively settles on cold surfaces. The volume of condensate becomes so large that the standard drainage system simply does not have time to evacuate it. In such cases, water often appears not only under the drawers, but also on the kitchen floor near the refrigerator.
Check the condition of the tray above the compressor (located at the back, below). If there is a crack in it, water will leak out. This is typical for older models, where the plastic dries out over time.

If you determine that the problem is most likely a clog, follow this algorithm. It will help you safely clean the system without calling a technician.
First, completely empty the lower part of the refrigerator. Remove all drawers, shelves and food items. This will provide access to the back wall and prevent water from spoiling food.
Locate the drainage hole. It is located at the bottom of the rear wall of the refrigerator, often under a plastic cover. Visually inspect the entrance: if dirt is visible, remove it with a dry cloth.
Take a soft brush, a cotton swab or a piece of thin wire wrapped in a rag. Carefully insert the tool into the hole and make rotational movements. Do not press too hard.

If you have a model with a system No Frost, do not forget that although ice does not clearly form there, moisture is still removed through the drainage. Periodically check the cleanliness of the area around the ventilation openings.

Is it possible to use chemical cleaning agents?
Using aggressive household chemicals (such as “Mole”) to clean the drainage in the refrigerator is strictly not recommended. Vapors from chemicals can get on food, and active substances can corrode plastic pipes or rubber seals, leading to more serious damage. Use only warm water or a weak solution of soda.
What to do if the water is frozen in the drain?
If you see an ice plug right in the inlet, do not pick it with a knife. Turn your refrigerator into defrost mode (if you have one) or simply unplug it for a few hours. The ice will melt naturally. To speed things up, you can carefully pour warm water over the area from a bulb or syringe.
