Tempered glass: the standard for safety and durability

This material undergoes a special heat treatment, during which it is heated to high temperatures and then cooled sharply. This technology changes the internal structure of the material, creating compressive stress on the surface, which makes it 5-7 times stronger than ordinary silicate glass.
The main feature of tempered glass is the nature of its destruction. Unlike regular glass, which produces razor-sharp shards when struck, tempered glass shatters into many small, blunt beads. This is critical for safety, especially if the shelf breaks under the weight of food or due to a heavy object falling. In this case, the risk of getting a serious cut is minimal.
In addition, tempered glass (the English name for tempered glass) has high heat resistance. It is extremely difficult to break a shelf made of this material using a household method - it is more likely that the plastic container standing on it will burst. However, polymers have a significant drawback: they are prone to scratches when cleaning with abrasive agents and can turn yellow or cloudy over time under the influence of ultraviolet radiation and aggressive detergents.
The heat resistance of acrylic is significantly lower than that of tempered glass. Polymer shelves can be deformed when in contact with hot dishes, so manufacturers often mark them warnings about temperature restrictions. If you often put freshly prepared dishes in the refrigerator, it is better to choose models with glass shelves.
