Many gardeners are faced with a situation where the sown seeds germinate, while some, on the contrary, remain stubbornly silent for weeks. This is not a defect in the planting material, but a protective mechanism of nature, which requires imitation of winter conditions to awaken the sprout. In wild conditions, seeds fall to the ground in the fall, overwinter under the snow and germinate in the spring when the soil warms up. Without this procedure, many crops will simply rot in the ground or lie in it until next year.

There is a misconception that it is enough to simply put a bag of seeds on the refrigerator shelf. However, for a successful result, it is necessary to strictly observe the temperature and humidity of the substrate. Improper preparation can lead to the embryo dying or, conversely, going into a state of dormancy even deeper.

What is stratification and why is it needed

Stratification is keeping seeds at a certain temperature and humidity to speed up their germination. In nature, this process occurs naturally when seeds, once in the soil, are exposed to cold, moisture and microorganisms. At home, we artificially recreate these conditions in order to “deceive” nature and get seedlings faster.

The main goal of the procedure is the destruction growth inhibitorsthat are in the seed coat. These substances prevent the seed from germinating at the wrong time, for example, in late autumn, when the young plant will inevitably die from frost. Only after prolonged exposure to low temperatures are chemical blockers destroyed.

For example, lavender or clematis seeds can “sleep” for up to three months, while some varieties of strawberries require a couple of weeks. It is important to consider that temperature regime should be stable, without sudden jumps.

Selection and preparation of planting material

The first step is to select quality seeds. Empty, damaged or too old seeds may not survive the procedure or produce weak, non-viable seedlings. Before starting stratification, it is recommended to conduct a visual inspection and, if necessary, soak the material in water for several hours to reject floating specimens.

Disinfection is a critical step that is often ignored by beginners. In conditions of high humidity and heat (after removal from the refrigerator), the risk of developing mold and fungal diseases increases many times over. Treatment with a weak solution potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide will help avoid the loss of all planting material.

The key success factor is maintaining a stable temperature. The optimal range for most crops is from 0 to +5 degrees Celsius. This corresponds to the temperature on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator or in the vegetable compartment. Lower temperatures can freeze the moisture inside the seed, and higher temperatures can provoke premature germination or the development of rot.

It is important to ensure access of oxygen to the seeds, since their respiration process does not stop even at rest. Using sealed bags without air access can suffocate the embryo. It is better to use containers with a tightly closing, but not a vacuum lid, or make holes in bags.

Step-by-step instructions: wet substrate method

The most common and reliable method is stratification in a wet substrate. To do this, the prepared container is filled with a mixture of sand and peat or pure vermiculite. The seeds are evenly distributed over the surface or lightly mixed with the substrate if there are a lot of them.

The container is closed with a lid or covered with film, leaving small holes for ventilation. It is recommended to open the container once a week to ventilate and check the humidity. If the substrate begins to dry out, it is slightly moistened with a spray bottle.

It is important to monitor the condition of the seeds throughout the entire period. The appearance of white fluffy mold indicates waterlogging or lack of ventilation. In this case, the seeds must be carefully washed, disinfected and replaced with a fresh substrate.

⚠️ Attention: If you notice that the seeds have begun to germinate ahead of schedule (for example, after 2 weeks instead of 4), the temperature should be reduced to 0...+1 °C to slow down growth, or planted in the ground, if conditions permit.

For some crops, such as delphinium or buttercup, two-stage stratification is recommended: first warm, then cold. The seeds are kept at room temperature for 2 weeks and then put in the refrigerator. This imitates the natural cycle of changing seasons.

What to do if mold appears?

If mold has just appeared, you can carefully remove it with a cotton swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide and increase the frequency of ventilation. If the damage is severe, the seeds will have to be washed in a fungicide solution and the substrate replaced completely.

Express method: snow stratification

The snow stratification method is especially popular for small seeds such as strawberries, lobelia or petunia. It allows you not only to moisten the seeds, but also to lightly press them into the soil when the snow melts, which makes sowing easier. This method is considered more natural and gentle.

To carry out the procedure, take a container with prepared soil. Sprinkle a layer of clean snow 1–2 cm thick on top. Scatter the seeds evenly over the surface of the snow. Melting, the snow will draw the seeds to the required depth and provide them with moisture.

The container with the crops is closed with a lid (not hermetically sealed!) and placed in the refrigerator on the bottom shelf. Check periodically to make sure the snow is not completely dry. If there is not enough snow, you can add more, but usually one layer is enough for the entire stratification period.

When the stratification time is right towards the end, the seeds need to be properly “awakened”. A sudden move from cold to warm can be a shock to the plant. It is recommended to keep the containers at room temperature for 1-2 days before sowing.

If the seeds have already hatched, handle them with extreme care so as not to damage the sprouts. Sowing is done in prepared, heated soil. The depth depends on the size of the seeds: small ones are only lightly sprinkled, large ones are planted at a depth of two seed diameters.

After sowing, the containers are covered with glass or film to create a greenhouse effect and placed in a warm, bright place. The first shoots may appear in a few days or weeks, depending on the crop and conditions.

Is it possible to interrupt stratification and resume it later?

A short-term increase in temperature (for example, when the power is turned off for several hours) is usually not critical. However, if the seeds have begun to actively germinate and you are not ready to plant them, the process can be slowed down by putting them in the cold again. Complete cessation of the process and restarting is possible, but it reduces germination.

Is it necessary to stratify purchased pelleted seeds?

Usually pelleted seeds have already undergone the necessary pre-sowing treatment, including stratification, if required. Additional cooling may damage the containment. Always read the information on the packaging: if it says “processed”, plant immediately.

Why did the seeds become covered with mucus in the refrigerator?

Mucilage is a sign of bacterial rot caused by excess moisture and lack of air. Such seeds are most likely already dead. To avoid this in the future, use a drier substrate and ventilate the containers more often.

Is it possible to use the freezer for stratification?

Absolutely not. The temperature in the freezer (-18 °C and below) will lead to crystallization of water inside the seed cells, which will rupture their shells and destroy the embryo. Stratification is carried out only in the refrigerator compartment at temperatures above zero.
