Powerful compressor from an old refrigerator: do it yourself

An old refrigerator that has been gathering dust for years in a garage or country house is often perceived as useless trash, subject to disposal. However, for the home craftsman, this is a real treasure trove of useful parts, the main one of which is the compressor-condenser group. Transforming this unit into a full-fledged air compressor is a task that can be done by anyone who knows how to hold a wrench and a soldering iron in their hands. Such a unit will become an indispensable assistant when painting a car, inflating tires or working with pneumatic tools.

The main advantage of a home-made device lies in its reliability and, importantly, quiet operation. Unlike bulky and noisy industrial analogues, piston compressor a household refrigerator operates almost silently, which allows you to use it even in a garage workshop without the risk of deafening yourself and your neighbors. Moreover, it is capable of producing a pressure of up to 10 atmospheres, which is quite enough for most household and semi-professional tasks.

Before proceeding with disassembly, you need to make sure that the very heart of the future system is in good working order. Hermetic compressors Soviet and modern refrigerators are structurally similar, but their technical condition can greatly vary. You will need a minimum set of tools and a few additional components that will turn the electromechanical unit into a functional pneumatic station.

Assessing the condition and preparing the compressor

The first step will be to remove the compressor from the refrigerator body. Usually it is mounted on the frame along with the capacitor (grid at the back), but for the compressor we only need the “pear” itself and the start relay. Carefully cut the copper tubes at a distance of 10-15 cm from the body to avoid chips getting inside the system. It is important not to damage the fittings, as they will be needed for connection.

Checking functionality is a critical stage. Connect the compressor to the network through the original start relay, observing the orientation (usually marked with an upward arrow). When voltage is applied, air should come out of the upper tube. Start relay here plays a key role, starting the motor winding and turning it off when a certain shaft rotation speed is reached.

⚠️ Attention: It is strictly forbidden to turn on the compressor without oil or with open fittings for a long time without load. This can lead to overheating of the windings and breakdown of the insulation, since in household models cooling is often tied to the circulation of freon and oil.

If the device hums but does not start, the piston may be jammed or the relay has failed. In this case, replace the relay with a known good one. It is also worth checking the resistance of the windings with a multimeter: there should be a certain resistance between the contacts, and not a short circuit or break.

Necessary materials and tools

To create a full-fledged compressor station, one motor is not enough. You will need a container for compressed air, since the direct flow from a piston compressor has pulsations and insufficient volume for stable operation of the tool. The ideal receiver (tank) would be an old fire extinguisher with a volume of 10-50 liters or a gas cylinder.

In addition to the container, a pressure control system. This includes a gearbox with a pressure gauge, which will indicate the current pressure in the system, and a pressure switch (pressostat), which automatically turns the motor on and off when preset thresholds are reached. Without these elements, safe operation is impossible.

  • 🛠️ Tools: a set of wrenches, a drill with metal drills, a hacksaw, a soldering iron or welding machine (for metal structures), pliers.
  • 🔩 Consumables: hoses (oil-gasoline resistant), clamps, adapters, fum tape or sealant for threaded connections, bolts and nuts.
  • ⚙️ Components: fire extinguisher (receiver), pressure reducer, pressure gauge, pressure switch, check valve, oil and water separator (optional).

Pay special attention to the selection of hoses. An ordinary PVC pipe may not withstand the pressure or may be destroyed by oil vapors that will be present in the compressed air. Use specialized hoses for pneumatics or high-pressure fuel hoses.

Making a receiver from a fire extinguisher

The most affordable and safe option for receiver is a metal fire extinguisher. Its body is designed for high pressure, which provides the necessary margin of safety. Before starting work, make sure that the fire extinguisher is empty and not under pressure. Remove the shut-off and release device and thoroughly rinse the container with water to remove any remaining powder.

In the upper part of the cylinder, holes must be drilled to install fittings. Typically two or three outlets are required: one for connecting the compressor (input), one for air outlet to the consumer and one for installing a pressure gauge and pressure switch. The threads in the holes must be cut with a tap or welded/soldered in threaded bosses.

After preparing the holes, install a check valve on the inlet pipe. This element is critical: it will not allow compressed air to go back into the compressor after it is turned off, which will prevent backfire and make it easier to start the engine the next time.

Assembling the pneumatic system

Assembling the system begins with mounting the compressor on a frame or wooden platform. Vibration during operation is an inevitable phenomenon, so use rubber gaskets under the engine feet. This will reduce noise and prevent connections from coming loose. Secure the receiver vertically, ensuring it is in a stable position.

Connect the compressor outlet pipe to the inlet of the receiver (through a check valve) using a copper tube or flexible hose. Next, a gearbox with an oil-moisture separator filter is installed at the receiver output. It is after the gearbox that the air becomes suitable for working with pneumatic tools or a spray gun.

Component Function Installation location Importance
Reverse valve Blocks reverse air flow Between the compressor and the receiver High
Pressure switch Automatic on/off of the motor On the receiver or comb Critical
Pressure gauge Visual pressure control On the receiver (before the gearbox) High
Reducer Reducing and stabilizing pressure After the receiver, in front of the tool Medium

Electrical connection diagram required accuracy. The pressure switch usually has a contact group that breaks or closes the compressor power supply circuit. You need to connect the phase wire of the network to one contact of the relay, and bring the second contact to the motor. The neutral wire goes directly to the engine.

Setup and first start

Before the first start, conduct a visual inspection of all connections. A soap solution will help identify air leaks: apply foam to the joints of pipes and fittings. The appearance of bubbles will indicate a leak, which must be eliminated by tightening or replacing the seal.

Adjustment pressure switch is carried out by rotating the adjusting screws under the cover. Usually there are two parameters: cut-in pressure (lower cut-in) and cut-out pressure (upper cut-out). For a household compressor, it is optimal to set the switch on to 2-3 atmospheres, and the switch off to 6-8 atmospheres.

⚠️ Attention: Do not exceed the maximum pressure for which your receiver and compressor are designed. Household refrigeration compressors are not designed for constant operation at the limit (10+ atm), the optimal operating range is up to 6-8 bar.

When you turn it on for the first time, keep your hand on the switch so that in case of an emergency (strong vibration, sparking, burning smell) immediately turn off the power to the system. Allow the compressor to build up pressure to the cutoff and check how hot the bulb housing is.

Maintenance and modernization

A homemade compressor requires regular maintenance. The main weak point is the oil. Unlike industrial models, in refrigeration compressors the oil circulates inside, but some of it can escape in the form of an emulsion with air. Periodically check the oil level (if there is an inspection window or dipstick) and add specialized compressor oil.

An important element of maintenance is draining the condensate. A drain valve must be installed at the bottom of the receiver. Moisture contained in compressed air settles at the bottom of the cylinder and causes corrosion. Open the tap regularly to remove water, especially after intensive work.

What will happen if you do not drain the condensate?

The accumulation of moisture inside the receiver will lead to rapid corrosion of the walls of the cylinder from the inside. Over time, this can weaken the metal and create the risk of the container rupturing under pressure, which is extremely dangerous. In addition, water will enter the pneumatic tool, rendering it inoperable.

For modernization, you can add a forced cooling system by installing a fan next to the compressor, or install an additional fine filter at the outlet for work that requires clean air (for example, airbrushing).

Safety during operation

Working with high pressure is potentially dangerous. Never attempt to repair a pressurized system. Before any intervention, bleed air from the receiver through a drain valve or pneumatic valve.

Place the compressor in a well-ventilated area. Although refrigerator compressors do not emit exhaust gases like internal combustion engines, they can become hot and require fresh air to cool the windings. Also avoid getting flammable liquids near electrical contacts.

Following simple operating rules will allow your homemade device to serve for years, providing you with compressed air for any need. A properly assembled unit from an old refrigerator often surpasses cheap Chinese analogues in terms of air quality and noise level.

What kind of oil should be poured into a compressor from a refrigerator?

Hermetically sealed compressors from refrigerators are usually filled with mineral oil (for example, Freon-12 or Freon-22, depending on the model) or synthetic polyester oil (POE) for modern ones refrigerants. When converting into an air compressor, it is better to use special compressor oil for air systems, since it is better separated from moisture and has the necessary viscosity characteristics for air. However, if the compressor is new and sealed, it already contains oil - changing it unless absolutely necessary is not recommended.

How many atmospheres can a regular refrigerator produce?

A standard household compressor from a refrigerator is capable of creating pressure up to 10-12 atmospheres (bar), but its working efficiency zone is in the range of 2-6 atmospheres Long-term operation at maximum values (close to 10 atm) leads to rapid overheating and wear of the piston group.

Is it necessary to change the oil in the compressor during refurbishment?

If the compressor was taken from an old, non-working refrigerator, the oil inside could oxidize or mix with freon breakdown products. In this case, it is recommended to carefully open the housing (which is difficult without damaging it) or simply drain the old oil through the lower tube (if possible) and flush the system. More often, technicians simply use the compressor “as is,” but monitor the temperature. If you open the system, replace the oil with fresh compressor oil.
