Creating an autonomous cooling device at home is not only an exciting experiment for radio amateurs, but also a practical necessity for those who spend a lot of time away from civilization or need a compact solution for storing medicines.

Required components and power calculation

To assemble a full-fledged device, a thermoelement alone is not enough; you will need a carefully selected set of components, each of which plays a critical role.

First of all, you need to decide on the power source, since the modules consume significant current, and ordinary batteries will not work here - you will need battery or a 12 Volt power supply.

The heat removal system must be much more powerful than the cold injection system, so a massive aluminum radiator with a high-speed fan is installed on the hot side.

Case preparation and thermal insulation

The efficiency of a homemade refrigerator is 80% dependent on the quality of thermal insulation, so the choice of materials for the case should be given priority attention.

The ideal option is to use sheet expanded polystyrene (penoplex) with a thickness of at least 50 mm, which has minimal thermal conductivity and is easy to process.

All sheet joints must be carefully taped with aluminum tape or filled with mounting foam to prevent cold bridges and the penetration of warm air inside.

If you are using a ready-made plastic container, its walls must be covered with an insulator from the inside, sacrificing part of the useful volume to preserve the cold.

Testing and optimization of operation

To combat condensation, you can use bags of silica gel or install a small fan inside the chamber for active circulation of dry air.

Remember that maximum efficiency is achieved when the chamber is fully loaded with products that act as a heat accumulator.

Frequent errors and troubleshooting

Beginners often make the mistake of trying to cool too large a volume with one module, forgetting that the power TEC1-12706 is limited and is not intended for industrial scale.

Another common problem is the use of weak power supplies, which drain voltage under load, which is why the module does not work at full capacity.

The absence of thermal paste or its drying out over time leads to a sharp increase in the temperature of the hot side and an emergency shutdown or combustion of the element.

Theoretically it is possible, but to achieve negative temperatures (-18°C) one cascade is not enough. It will be necessary to use a two-stage circuit (module on module) or very powerful insulation and low ambient temperature, which makes the process energetically impractical.

How much electricity does such a refrigerator consume?

One ​​standard module consumes about 60-70 watts per hour. With round-the-clock operation, the consumption will be approximately 1.5 kWh per day, which is 3-4 times more than a modern compressor refrigerator of the same volume.

Do you need to use distilled water to cool the radiator?
