However, the cost of industrial models often scares away home craftsmen, forcing them to look for alternative solutions. An excellent solution is to create a homemade device based on available components that are often left over after repairing household appliances.
The basis of our design will be compressor from an old refrigerator. This unit has sufficient power to create a deep vacuum in domestic conditions and is highly reliable. Unlike cheap Chinese analogues, Soviet or high-quality modern motors can work for years without loss of performance if they are provided with the right operating conditions.

Preparation of the necessary materials and tools
Before Before starting assembly, you need to make sure that all components are present. The basic element, of course, is the compressor itself. Units from medium-sized refrigerators are best suited as they provide an optimal balance between performance and noise levels. Make sure that the engine is in good working order: it should start, run smoothly and not make any extraneous knocks or metallic clangs.
In addition to the motor, you will need a receiver - a container to stabilize the pressure. Old fire extinguishers, gas cylinders, or even thick plastic bottles are often used as receivers for initial testing, although the latter are not suitable for continuous use. Hoses, clamps, vacuum gauges and check valves are also needed to prevent the flow of oil or air in the opposite direction.

Don't forget to prepare tools for installation. You will need a hacksaw or grinder for cutting pipes, a drill for drilling holes in the receiver, a set of screwdrivers and wrenches. To seal connections, it is critical to have high-quality silicone sealant or epoxy resin, as well as FUM tape for threaded connections.
⚠️ Attention: When working with metal cylinders (fire extinguishers, gas containers), make sure that they are completely empty and not under pressure. Opening cylinders that may contain gas without prior degassing and washing can be explosive.
Dismantling and preparing the compressor
The process begins by removing the compressor from the refrigeration unit. Carefully cut through the copper tubes coming from the motor, leaving a margin of at least 5-7 centimeters in length. These “tails” will be needed for subsequent connection of hoses. If you are using an old unit, there may be refrigeration oilremains in it, which during operation will be released along with the air.
To determine the inlet and outlet pipes, turn on the compressor briefly. The pipe from which air blows is a discharge pipe (outlet), and the one that draws in air (check with your palm or a piece of paper) is a suction pipe (inlet). To create a vacuum sealer, we are interested in the suction pipe to which the pumping system will be connected.
Often craftsmen are faced with the problem of oil splashing. To solve this, you can carefully open the compressor casing (if it is welded, this is more difficult, if it is bolted, it is easier) and plug the oil intake pipe inside the crankcase, leaving only the air intake. However, for beginners, a safer method is to install an external oil separator or use a more complex circuit with a receiver-sump.
Is it necessary to change the oil in the compressor?
In most cases, an oil change is not required if the compressor is taken from a working refrigerator. However, if the unit has been sitting for a long time or the oil has turned black and has a burning smell, it is better to replace it with a special vacuum or high-quality mineral oil of the appropriate viscosity.
Manufacture and preparation of the receiver
The receiver functions as a buffer, smoothing out pressure pulsations and accumulating the volume of pumped out air. Without it, it will be difficult to create a stable vacuum in the bag, and the compressor will work in a ragged mode, quickly wearing out. Fire extinguishers with a volume of 2-5 liters are ideal: they are durable, have a convenient shape and standard holes for mounting fittings.
Before installing the fittings, the cylinder must be prepared. Cut off the nozzle flare if it is in the way, and thoroughly clean the inner surface of rust and powder residues. This can be done by pouring a hot solution of alkali or a special rust remover inside, and then rinsing vigorously with water several times. The cleanliness of the internal cavity is critical for the durability of the system.
In the upper part of the receiver it is necessary to drill holes and weld or screw a threaded fitting onto the sealant. Typically three outputs are required: one to connect to the compressor, a second to connect to the vacuum chamber (package) and a third to install a vacuum gauge. Be sure to seal the threaded connections FUM tape or Tangit Unilock thread to ensure complete tightness.

The system is assembled sequentially, starting from the source vacuum. The compressor is installed on a vibration-isolating substrate (for example, a piece of rubber or thick felt) to reduce noise and vibration during operation. A shut-off valve must be installed between the receiver and the connection point for the packages. This allows you to turn off the vacuum line without turning off the engine, which is convenient for serial packaging. A check valve is also integrated into the system, which prevents air from returning to the receiver after the compressor stops, maintaining a vacuum.

To connect packages you can use a special fitting with a clamp or make a simple vacuum chamber from transparent polycarbonate. The hose from the system is connected to the hole in the chamber. Monitor the temperature of the compressor: during prolonged operation, it can heat up to 60-80 degrees Celsius, which is normal, but requires breaks in operation for cooling.
Safety precautions and operation
Operation of homemade equipment requires strict adherence to safety rules. A compressor is an electromechanical device operating under 220V voltage. All electrical connections must be securely insulated and the unit itself must be grounded. Do not allow moisture to get on the electrical part of the motor.
It is important to remember the temperature conditions. Refrigeration compressors are not intended for 24/7 operation. They are designed for cyclic operation. When pumping large volumes of air, the motor may overheat. It is recommended to work in cycles: 15-20 minutes of pumping, then 10 minutes of rest to cool the windings.
⚠️ Attention: Never attempt to use this device to pump out aggressive chemical vapors, solvents or explosive gases. Vapors can destroy the insulation of the motor windings or create a spark, which will lead to a fire or explosion.
Regularly check the oil level in the compressor through the inspection window (if equipped) or by ear. If the motor starts to run louder or vibrates, the lubricant level may have dropped. Also periodically drain the condensate from the receiver through the drainage hole, if it is provided for in the design.
Frequent malfunctions and methods for eliminating them
During operation, you may encounter a number of typical problems. The most common of them is a drop in productivity or the inability to achieve the desired vacuum. Most often, the reason lies in the loss of tightness of the connections or wear of the piston group of the compressor. Check the system thoroughly with a soapy solution.
Another common problem is oil leakage. If the compressor begins to spit oil, it is necessary to check the crankcase ventilation system or install a more efficient oil separator at the outlet. Sometimes replacing the oil with a thicker or specialized oil that is resistant to foaming helps.

Is it possible to use a car compressor instead of a refrigeration one?
Theoretically it is possible, but car compressors (diaphragm or piston) are usually designed for high discharge pressure, and not for deep vacuum at the inlet. Their suction performance is often lower, and their service life when operating in vacuum mode can be significantly shorter. A refrigeration compressor is better suited for this task structurally.
What is the maximum vacuum that can be obtained?
A single-stage piston compressor from a household refrigerator is capable of creating a vacuum of about 80-90 kPa (residual pressure 10-20 kPa). This is approximately 600-700 mm Hg. Art. Is it necessary to change the oil in the compressor for a vacuum pump?

It is advisable to use special low-evaporation oils for vacuum pumps, although at the initial stages high-quality mineral oil for refrigeration compressors is also suitable, if you monitor its level.
